2024 regulations have been read 6,605 times so far!
In order to maintain the vision of IPKC, these regulations may be edited or changed before the season start without notice.
CLASS DETAILS
INTRODUCTION
The Independent Privateers Kart Championship (IPKC) is classified as an IKR (Independent Kart Race) and therefore runs outside the MSUK (Motor Sport UK). However, we still look to the governing body for guidelines as laid out by them annually. Where appropriate, governing body rules apply. These may be changed, varied, or amended to suit the IPKC. We will adhere to the safety guidelines of the National Karting Association were possible. We reserve the right to change these regulations as we see fit at any time, giving notice where possible via social media and email. The governing body documentation will be used for clarifications of specifications, regulation, and restrictions. We will also look to the governing bodies for guidelines on sportsmanship and general behaviour.
No racing licence is required, and first-time racers are welcome, but basic competence is essential. Driver competence will be continuously monitored. In the unlikely event that a driver falls below the standards of a safe racer, they will be prevented from continued participation in the event and asked to demonstrate competency before being allowed to enter further events. Drivers are welcome to elect to start any race from the back of the grid should they wish, subject to providing reasonable notice. Drivers who sign onto events as a novice, will start from the back of the grid. Novice plates can be removed at any time, subject to the Clerk of Course’s approval, drivers who do not fall within 115% of the fastest drivers will be classed as a novice. If a driver is in-experienced and under 18, then it’s the parents/guardian’s responsibility to educate them as to IPKC driving standards and rules.
Established teams that comprise of numerous drivers representing a team that operate with a high budget and team principles are not permitted to enter the IPKC. We focus on raw driver talent via a grassroots approach. Competitors that operate themselves in an established team capacity shall instantly be excluded from the championship with any and all payments made being nonrefundable. A Maximum of 3 karts per awning only, however, we allow the use of 2 awnings side by side so long as the 3 karts per awning rule is not broken.
(Awning exceptions may be made in certain circumstances, by the IPKC, after investigation).
Please read the IPKC team driver(s) ruling (introduced during our 2023 pre-season).
We understand that there may be times where contact is needed to be made with the IPKC organisers. If you need to gain our attention outside of a race weekend, then please do so by emailing us on the address below:

CHAMPIONSHIP MEDIA
All competitors in all classes are required to display removable championship sponsorship branding in a bid to show support to IPKC. This includes, if required & not limited to, the following items:
1. IPKC visor stickers (Helmet)
2. Sponsorship advertising stickers (Kart)
These must be displayed by competitors in any and all IPKC events.
TEAM RESTRICTIONS RULING
The IPKC do not discriminate against any driver that is part of a team outside of the championship or not. However, there are certain rules and expectations of an outside team driver that is attending any IPKC events independently.
These rules & expectations need to be adhered to for continued participation within the championship for both guests & members.
1. Team affiliated drivers are permitted to enter IPKC “Independently”
2. Maximum of 1 kart per awning (unless immediate family, max 2 per awning).
3. Separate awnings cannot be pitched next to each other and must be a min of 4 spaces apart.
4. Awnings not to include team branding.
5. Team kart stickers and race suits are permitted. (A none team race suit would be preferred but not mandatory).
6. Only 1 team official allowed regardless of the amount of additional drivers in the paddock. (Owner, Principle, Mechanic or other, you choose)
7. The team principle/mechanic can only spanner/coach the driver they arrive with.
8. Parents/Guardians/Family members, Official/mechanic & driver maximum per awning.
9. You choose the official: You cannot bring an official and an independent mechanic.
10. Additional drivers can bring an independent, none team affiliated, mechanic if absolutely needed.
We are allowing 1 team official to attend the event with a driver, this is anyone that is an official team representative (Owner, Principle, Mechanic etc) but 1 only! If, for example, 2 members of the same team attend the event separately, there is still only 1 official allowed, the other driver(s) can only bring an independent mechanic if required.
An independent mechanic can not be part of the team outside of IPKC and must be 100% independent although we do encourage/prefer “Parent & Child / Dad & Lad”.
When IPKC was formed, the idea of no teams was to eliminate the huge awnings and race trucks & sharing of data amongst many drivers etc.. Having single popup awnings helps us achieve this goal with the restrictions in place. We think that you can all agree that whilst we do have a few “team” drivers enter IPKC independently, we certainly do not have large teams.
The IPKC are trying to adopt the ethos of independent racing and we implore entrants to help the championship achieve this goal being a team affiliated driver or not.
Any driver who is part of a team outside of IPKC must conduct themselves independently. Team drivers must also understand that they are racing against and not “with” any other team driver(s).
Any team(s) that attempt to bypass these rulings shall be met with a meeting exlusion for the entire team without refund.
This ruling has been heavily discussed & amended taking into account arguments from both sides of the fence and has been created in a way that promotes inclusiveness and fairness.
GENERAL RULES THAT APPLY TO ALL CLASSES
Tyres should only be used in the condition you receive them in. No softener or tyre warmers are allowed. Tyres are controlled and must be scanned in with scrutineering or dummy grid official on or before race day morning practice. The IPKC restrict the amount of race tyres that can be used over the season, please see the tyre ruling section below. Any condition tyre may be used on Saturday but only your registered race tyres are to be used on race day and must be used for practice, all heats & final(s).
Guest entries have different tyre rulings in place, please see the tyre ruling section below.

Lead or ballast must be attached to the kart by a minimum of two (2) M8 bolt mechanical fixings including washers (Chief Scrutineer may request a 3rd M8 bolt be fitted if there are concerns that 2 may fail) with a maximum of 5 kg per mounting. The total amount of ballast must not exceed 30kg without prior agreement with the Race Director & or Chief Scrutineer. Minimum ages are laid out class by class. Any driver wishing to compete outside of these parameters, must seek approval in writing from the organisers. All engines must be sealed and unmodified from purchase spec. Details of this are outlined in each class regulations. We will not provide any hireable transponders at any of our rounds unless stated otherwise in final instructions, but will endeavour to make available where possible, therefore all drivers must provide their own transponder if possible. Please make sure to enter your transponder number upon event registration.
The IPKC encourage the use of social media to promote drivers and their achievements. However, the championship takes a very stern view on those who wish to use any social media platform to dishearten, tarnish, bully or discriminate against other users, whether they are other drivers, mechanics, family/friends, officials, championship organisers or the IPKC championship itself. Those who take it upon themselves to do so will be investigated by the organisers, who will decide upon the decision of penalty and/or if outside authorities need to be contacted. The offender will be given only one chance to remove the post/image or video material from their page before any investigation will commence. Remember, you will only cause disruption to yourself or your driver. So, THINK before acting.
IPKC has a strict policy on behaviour in the paddock and on circuit making it a fun, friendly, welcoming and positive environment. Anyone who does not meet these standards or causes disruption may have their membership revoked and banned from attending any further meetings, membership/race fees will not be refunded.
The IPKC do not make use of scrutineering cards. Instead, we request that you enter your relevant information into our online scrutineering via your Alpha account.
All karts must run CIK certified “drop down” nose cones. If a driver finishes a race with a dropped down bumper a none appealable +5 sec time penalty will be applied. Side pods fitted to the kart should not exceed the width of the rear tyres, 50% of the rear wheels should be covered by the rear bumper and not exceed the width of the rear wheels at all times. Front, rear and both side numbers are required, All numbers (max 3) should be clearly printed, the exact colour combination is laid out in the classes below. A Novice must run White on Black numbers, novices may remove their novice plates at the discretion of the Clerk and display the relevant colours for their class.
NO ITALIC OR FANCY FONT STYLES ARE PERMITTED
EVENT ENTRY
The IPKC will be held over 6 rounds starting in April. A £155 membership is required before the championship starts to secure your place at each round. Once a membership has been paid this is non-refundable, race fees for Saturday practice and Sunday racing are also £155 when booked over two (2) weeks in advance. Later entries incur an additional £15 late entry fee. Late entries also risk their slot going on open sale after the 2-week deadline. Drivers who do not pay a membership fee at the beginning of the year, will be charged and entered as a guest. Guest driver entry fees are £170 including the £15 late entry fee..
All drivers must have “signed on” to race before the weekend, or before Saturday practice has begun, using the Alpha timings signing-on portal. By “signing on”, all competitors, parents and/or guardians understand and accept the risks involved on a practice or race day. It is also the responsibility of the competitor to explain the risks to anyone associated with them. Drivers under the age of 18, must have their entry countersigned by a parent or guardian, who must also be present for the duration of the meeting. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure the drivers fully understand all the rules and regulations, especially those to do with flags and fair racing. Briefing notes will be issued before every weekend. Parents must go through these with the driver prior to taking part in any event. Any competitor arriving to the dummy grid not having signed on will have participation revoked until such time they have signed on correctly.
GUEST ENTRY
Guests are permitted to enter IPKC but must participate in both Saturday practice and Sunday race day.
Guest entry fee’s are £155 + £15 administrational fee totalling £170.
Tyre rulings for guests are outlined in the tyres section below.

There is no restriction on the amount of rounds a guest can enter. You are free to guest enter the entire calendar if you so choose.
TO BE UPDATED….
POINTS AND FORMAT
The championship table will be created by awarding points to each driver for their finishing position in each heat and the final. These are added together to give the overall winner (highest point scorer) over the course of the championship. Trophies will be awarded for the top 3 finishers in each final (in grids of 10+ drivers). Further trophies may be awarded at the discretion of the organisers. Each round will consist of open Saturday practice. Sunday will consist of a practice / transponder check, 3 heats and a final. (Timings and heats may vary depending on the track – this will be announced in advance). Please note that transponders may be requested to be fitted to karts after lunch time on Saturday practice.
Starting positions for heats 1, 2 & 3 will be randomly generated. The final starting positions will be determined by the overall points awarded over the previous 3 heats. If there is a tie on points, then the highest grid position will be used to determine the grid position. Finals will be based on the overall points total from all 3 heats. Points will be awarded at all rounds.
In the event of IPKC making the decision to miss out any heats and head straight to the finals (Example: removing heat 3), points will not be awarded for the removed heat.
The IPKC can, at their discretion, remove any heats for any reason which could include loss of life, medical emergency, lack of time etc but will not make this decision lightly.
To receive points, drivers must complete 50% of the race distance and take the chequered flag. (removed 09/10/2023)
The maximum points scored at each round is 150.
DNS = 0 POINTS
DNF = Last Place Points (Respective of DNF order) – (Added 09/10/2023)
(To qualify for points, driver’s must have crossed the line and taken the official race start. This will be verified via Alpha Timing. A DNF on the rolling lap resulting in a driver not taking the official start of the race will be classified as a DNS resulting in 0 points)
DNF = 0 POINTS (removed 09/10/2023)LESS THAN 50% DISTANCE WHEN TAKING CHEQUERED = 0 POINTS (removed 09/10/2023)
Heat Points: 1st 35, 2nd 34, 3rd 33, 4th 30, 5th 29, 6th 28 etc…
Final Points: 1st 45, 2nd 40, 3rd 38, 4th 35, 5th 34, 6th 33 etc…
Guest drivers do not score championship points.
DROP ROUND
For 2024, the IPKC are introducing a championship drop round.
This enables competitors to drop their lowest scoring round within the 2024 season.
We have introduced this to help competitors remain competitive due to unforseen circumstances / clashes etc..
You do not need to attend the round to have it qualify as a drop round.
Any round that you do not attend will automatically be assigned as a drop round.
PERC FERME
DRIVERS ARE NOT TO LEAVE PERC FERME WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION FROM THE SCRUTINEER(S)
PARENTS & MECHANICS ARE NOT TO ENTER PERC FERME UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY THE DUMMY GRID OFFICIAL(S)
1. Any driver that leaves perc ferme without the express permission of the scrutineer(s) and or dummy grid official(s) will automatically receive a race exclusion for that session.
2. Any parent / mechanic that enters perc-ferme without the express permission of the dummy grid official(s) or scrutineer(s) will automatically receive a race exclusion for their driver for that session.
Following each heat and final, the top 3/4 and any other random kart(s) will be directed into scrutineering for weight checks. The Chief Scrutineer may also perform other compliance checks, so please bring basic tools.
Any driver found to be non-compliant with any technical regulations will be disqualified from the race. The Chief Scrutineer is a judge of fact, and his decision cannot be overturned. Any driver found to be deliberately cheating may be handed a further penalty, ranging from championship points deduction to expulsion from the meeting and/or championship. Competitors must present their kart and safety equipment (helmet, race suit etc) at scrutineering prior to racing. All equipment must be in a safe condition to use, which will be determined by the Chief Scrutineer on the day. Remember, he is a judge of fact.
Numbers on the dummy grid are strictly limited to driver +1 assistant. Once the kart is on the floor, it is under parc-ferme conditions and may not be worked upon without the express permission of the Clerk. If a race meeting is suddenly declared open for tyres, you may change the tyres only. (e.g., from slicks to wets), but make no set up changes to the kart. Karts should be on the floor in their dummy grid spots, at the latest of two (2) minutes before their race, or whenever the grid marshal signals. The dummy grid marshal will close the grid with 1 minute of the current race remaining, failure to be present or arriving after this time will result in you either running from the back or being refused entry all together. Minor work to resolve starting failures will normally be allowed. If there is an unexpected delay, the grid marshal may signal a pause to parc-ferme conditions, at which point, karts may be returned to their trollies to be worked on by the driver and their assistant only. A time limit will be given and any competitors not ready to take the start will not be allowed to compete. Once you have placed your kart on the floor, and your driver is in the kart, you must stand to the side or exit the dummy grid thus leaving space for other karts to be placed down. Any person found deliberately or intentionally blocking karts or delaying entry to the track, their driver will be excluded from the race.
If a driver retires his or her kart from the circuit through means of the pit lane or mechanical breakdown on circuit, then that driver and kart cannot re-join the race. For those in Honda Cadet, Micro Max, Mini Max and Junior Max an official may give assistance to get the kart started again, however, he is not a mechanic and therefore will not spend any more than 1 minute trying to work out the problem. If the official cannot get the kart running again for any reason, then the driver will be asked to exit their kart for their own personal safety and be asked to stand in a safe place, as pointed out by the official. The kart will be recovered by the officials to a safe location until the end of the race, when the Clerk will give all clear for the mechanic / parent to enter the circuit to recover the kart.
Parents & mechanics do not have access into parc ferme at the end of a session until such a time that all drop down checks have been completed and all karts have come to a full stop. The dummy grid marshal on the day will indicate when you are able to enter to assist your driver in scrutineering or collect your driver and kart.
SAFETY AND MISC
All karts and protective equipment including helmets, gloves and footwear may be inspected before any practice. All karts and equipment must be scrutineered before racing commences. Number plates must be fitted front, rear and both sides and must be kept in good condition. Drivers must also display the correct number (maximum of 3 digits) and coloured plates for their class. This must have a minimum 10mm border around the numbers. Drivers must without delay obey all flags given by the officials. Drivers are responsible for learning all flags and their meanings before going out on circuit. If you are in doubt, please ask before racing.
Championship organisers welcome the use of go pros and other onboard video recording devices, these devices must be mounted securely with a secondary attachment eg cable ties and must not me mounted to the helmet. They must not obstruct the driver’s view or pose a risk to others.
Video footage will NOT be accepted as evidence to appeal or overturn an official’s decision, however from time to time, officials may request to see footage to get a better understanding of an incident.
In the event of a driver requiring the medical team, the Clerk will call for a red flag. The karts will be either directed straight into the pits or told to wait in a designated area on the track. Only once all karts have come to a stop will the medical team be allowed to enter the circuit. Those drivers who are attended to by the medical team will need to be cleared by the Chief Medical Officer and also by the Chief Scrutineer, who will check the kart in a more detailed inspection and also the driver’s safety gear (Helmet, racing suit etc…) Only when both teams are happy for the driver to continue may he or she do so with the Clerks permission.
During racing, the centre of the track is out of bounds to all except signed on officials. Signed on parents/mechanics/ guardians are permitted at the discretion of the Clerk and must wear an IPKC high-visibility vest at all times. The use of timing equipment (including mobile phones) and coaching a driver from the centre of the track is not permitted. Failure to comply may result in a race exclusion.
Recovery of karts from the track is not permitted during racing and will only be allowed at the end of the race at the discretion of the Clerk.
The following safety equipment must be worn during all practice and race sessions:
Helmets: CIK/MSA/SNELL/ACU specification racing helmets.
Suits: CIK homologated with no limits on homologated date.
Footwear: Racing boots with ankle protection.
Gloves: CIK/MSA/Snell racing gloves.
ACU APPROVED HELMETS MUST HAVE THE ACU GOLD STICKER ON FULL VISUAL DISPLAY NO STICKER = NO HELMET
ALL safety equipment must be in good condition with no significant damage that would reduce the item’s ability to protect the driver. It is highly recommended by the championship organisers that all entries carry a simple first aid kit, containing plasters, medical tape, scissors, medical bandages and disinfecting spray or wipes.
TRANSPONDERS
Transponders are circuit dependent, with both AMB and TAG types potentially being used over the season, it is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure they have the correct transponder type at each event. It is strongly recommended that every competitor has their own transponder. Hire transponders will be made available if possible. All hire transponders will be provided by circuit. The organisers will provide information on this prior to each event. Transponders must be mounted to the back of the seat. If a transponder is hired, it must be secured with a proprietary bracket. The competitor will be responsible for the safe return of any hired transponder to the circuit.
FIRE SAFETY
It is compulsory that all entries must have an in-date foam or powder fire extinguisher. Those in awnings with all sides covered must place extras near the door(s) of entry and exit. In the event of fire, if safe to do so, extinguish in a safe and controlled manor and report the incident to the IPKC senior officials straight away so that an incident report can be written. If the fire is too dangerous to extinguish, please use your common sense and alert the emergency services first and then the race officials asap.
We also insist that competitors carry with them an in-date Lipo Battery fire extinguisher, however not compulsory if using a lead acid battery, but compulsary if using a Lipo battery!
The IPKC do carry a large Lipo fire extinguisher located in the scrutineering bay in the event of equipment failure
TYRES
RACE TYRES
The IPKC are restricting the amount of tyres for all classes that competitors are permitted to use for our 2024 season.
Competitors are restricted to 3 complete sets of class specific race slicks and are able to use their tyres in any combination they see fit.
Tyres need to be scanned in to the championship on or before (preferred) Sunday morning practice. If your tyres have not been scanned in prior to Sunday morning practice, then the tyres that are fitted will be scanned in on the dummy grid and deemed race tyres (NO EXCEPTIONS).Scanned race tyres only are to be used for all Sunday official sessions (Practice, Heats & Final), competitors attempting to participate in an official Sunday session using none scanned tyres will be refused entry to the dummy grid or disqualified from the session.
Please make sure to have the correct tyres fitted for race day.
PRACTICE TYRES
Any condition tyres (dry/wet) may be used for Saturday practice sessions so long as they are class specific as outlined in the 2024 regulations.
Multiple sets of tyres (dry/wet) may be used so long as they are class specific tyres as outlined in the 2024 regulations.
WET RACE TYRESA maximum of 1 set of class specific wet tyres to be signed on to each event. (REMOVED 27/02/2024)Wet tyres are now unlimited for the 2024 championship (Class Specific Wet Tyres Only) These do not need to be scanned into the system, instead a visual inspection will be conducted by the dummy grid marshal to ensure your class specific wet tyres are in use. Anyone found to be using none class specific tyres will be turned away from the dummy grid.
EMERGENCY WET TYRES (REMOVED 27/02/2024)
Competitors are able to also sign on 1 set of class specific wet tyres as “emergency wets”. These can only be used if the clerk / organisers deem it necessary to maintain a safe race meeting. If emergency wets are approved, this will be declared meeting wide and all competitors permitted the use of these tyres.
Emergency wets CANNOT be used unless declared!
GUEST TYRES
Guests must! Use their tyres for both Saturday practice and Sunday race day with no exceptions. It is your responsibility to ensure that your tyres will last the entire meeting. The only time IPKC will allow a guest to change a tyres is in the event of failure or damage, any replacement tyre will need to be inspected by the chief scrutineer and approved / updated on the system.
It is your responsibility to ensure your tyres will last the weekend as tyres will not be exchanged purely for wear.
This is in place to keep the championship as fair as possible.
Guest tyres need to be scanned into the system by or on the first Saturday practice session.
Guests are required to participate in an absolute minimum of 4 Saturday practice sessions with a minimum of 75% of the session distance covered.
Participation of less than 75% of a Saturday practice will be accepted only in the case of mechanical failure or on circuit accidents.
For every session that is missed, of the required 4, you will be placed off the back of your heat(s):
1 missed = Back of heat 1
2 missed = Back of heat 1 & 2
3 missed = Back of all heats and Final.
If your tyres have not been scanned in prior to the first Saturday morning practice session, then the tyres that are fitted will be scanned in on the dummy grid and deemed race tyres and are to be used for the entire weekend (NO EXCEPTIONS).Guests cannot enter just the race day in a bid to bypass the ruling and must participate in both days of the meeting.
CLASS SPECIFIC TYRES:
Honda Cadet: Vega Cadetti / WM1 Wet
Honda R200: Dunlop SL3 / KT3
Rotax Micro: Vega Cadetti / WM1
Rotax Inter: Mojo C2 / CW
Junior Max, Junior Rookie, Senior Max & Senior 177: Maxxis Sport / SLW
FALSE STARTS
In the event that a false start is declared (green flag with yellow chevron, detailed on final page), drivers are required to cease racing and complete a full lap in formation. By the second to last corner, all drivers should be at a rolling start (reduced) pace ready to take the start. If the start line official is happy, the lights will go out or the green flag is displayed. If 2 false starts have already been declared, the third false start will result in a deduction of circuit time to the value of 1 minute. For every false start thereafter, 1 minute circuit time will be deducted per false start. There are certain reasons that the start line official, Clerk Of Course will declare a false start outlined below.
1. Tramline infringement (25% or more of the karts width is outside the tramlines on a rolling start).
2. Speed is too fast or too slow (25% race pace is required for rolling starts).
3. Acceleration before the indicated acceleration line / cones.
4. Incidents on circuit.
Time will NOT be deducted for declared false starts if called because of an incident out on circuit.
judicial procedure
The circuit marshal/observers reports the incident to the Clerk Of Course. The Clerk Of Course may also act on an incident only witnessed by himself. The Clerk Of Course reviews the incident and decides on a penalty. The competitor accepts the penalty, and the Clerk Of Course decision is
final. Video evidence will not be accepted as a form of appeal but can be requested by the Clerk Of Course.
Any abuse or consistent harassment to any official will not be tolerated and will result in you being excluded from the meeting and possibly the championship.
The Clerk Of Course will make time to talk through the decision-making process and suggest improvement to drivers.
AMOUNT OF EQUIPMENT (ALL CLASSES)
For each race event (practice to the Final), unless otherwise specified in the Supplementary Regulations, the maximum amount of equipment is:
